Shomu Mukherjee was a famous Bengali producer, director and writer. He was the fourth out of six brothers born to Sati Rani Devi and the owner of Filmalaya Studios -Sashadhar Mukherjee. His mother was the only sister of the Ganguly brothers - Kishore Kumar, Anoop Kumar and Ashok Kumar; who ruled the Indian Cinema in their times.
Shomu got married to veteran actress Tanuja, who herself hailed from a family of exceptional actors like Nutan (her sister) and Shobhana Samarth (her mother). The couple has two beautiful daughters - Kajol and Tanisha out of their wedlock. Both of them are renowned actresses in Bollywood. His elder brothers Late Joy Mukherjee, Late Rono mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee have been really successful in production fields. Director Ayan Mukherji and Actress Rani Mukherji are his nephew and niece respectively.
Shomu Mukherjee began his career with Ek Bar Mooskura Do in 1972 as a producer. It was on the sets of this movie when he and Tanuja first met and in 1973, they got into an alliance. After the birth of his two daughters Kajol and Tanisha, Shomu Mukherjee parted ways with Tanuja and began living with his brothers in Grotto Villa while Tanuja went on to live in Usha Kiran (skyscraper in Mumbai) with her two daughters.
However, both parents kept the line of communication open for each other and Kajol was a regular at Shomu's residence on Durga Puja.Apart from his debut, he has also successfully written, directed and produced films like Lover Boy, Chhaillia Babu, Pathar Ke Insaan, Fifty Fifty and many more.
Shomu Mukherjee breathed his last on 10th April 2008 after a massive heart arrest. Ironically, it was a day before Ajay Devgan's (Kajol's husband) first direction - U, Me aur Hum. He was 64 years of age.
Kajol dedicates her Bengali temperament to his father Shomu. Although she appeared firm at his funeral, she was very heart broken after he passed away. Media even reported her breakdown at a TV reality show. In Karan Johar's Coffee with Karan, she quoted, "My father was suffering for so long. It was more a freedom from pain than anything else. I'm sure he is happy wherever he is."
